Abel Makonnen Tesfaye, plus connu sous son nom de scène The Weeknd, né le 16 février 1990 à Toronto (Ontario), Canada, est un chanteur et producteur de musique canadien d'origine ethiopienne. Ses chansons Can't Feel My Face, The Hills et Starboy (réalisée en compagnie du duo Daft Punk) atteignent la première place du Billboard Hot 100 et du Canadian Hot 100 Et de Pray For Me (réalisé avec Kendrick Lamar) pour la sortie du film Black Panther. Son album Starboy atteint la première place du Billboard 200 et du Canadian Albums Chart. Abel Tesfaye grandit à Scarborough, dans l'Est de Toronto. D’origine éthiopienne, il apprend l’amharique (une langue sémitique) auprès de sa grand-mère, qui s’occupe de lui tous les jours pendant que sa mère, qui l'élève seule, est au travail. Dans sa jeunesse, Abel Tesfaye est exposé aux influences musicales d’artistes RnB et pop comme Michael Jackson, R. Kelly et Prince. Il abandonne l’école à 17 ans, s’établissant avec deux amis dans le quartier torontois de Parkdale. Il découvre la drogue et obtient son premier emploi dans un magasin American Apparel ; c’est à cette époque qu’il commence à enregistrer des chansons. Le 6 mars 2011, le chanteur Drake parle de The Weeknd sur le réseau social Twitter, suscitant la curiosité du public. Durant l'été, The Weeknd met en ligne sur son site un premier album House of Ballons qui rencontre un bon accueil critique. La chanson titre, basée sur un sample du hit single Happy House de Siouxsie and the Banshees, est saluée par le site influent Pitchfork. La musique éclectique de The Weeknd combine des samples d'autres artistes comme Beach House et Aaliyah. Deux autres mixtapes (Thursday et Echoes of Silence) sortent la même année.
