The Kooks est un quartet anglais formé à Brighton, Royaume-Uni, en 2004. Leur premier album s'est vendu à plus d'un million d'exemplaires au Royaume-Uni. Le groupe se forme au Brighton Institute of Modern Music, où les quatre jeunes étudient. Le chanteur et guitariste Luke Pritchard réussit à impliquer le bassiste Max Rafferty dans un projet de collège, ce qui forme la base du groupe. Après que se joignent à eux le guitariste Hugh Harris et le drummer Paul Garred, le groupe prend le nom The Kooks (signifiant "dingue", "loufoque"), d'après une chanson de l'album Hunky Dory de David Bowie. Ils sont rapidement signés par Virgin Records. Pritchard a apparemment écrit le hit du groupe "Naïve" alors qu'il n'avait que 16 ans ; c'est cette chanson qui a propulsé le premier album des Kooks, Indise In / Inside Out (2006), dans le Top 20 des palmarès britanniques durant plus de la moitié de 2006. Le second album studio, Konk, sort le 14 avril 2008. Faisant la couverture de la publication estivale du magazine Beyond Race, il est instantanément propulsé au numéro 1 des palmarès des ventes d'albums britanniques et au numéro 2 des palmarès irlandais. Une édition limitée offre un second disque, nommé RAK, proposant neuf titres supplémentaires, dont une version alternative de "See the Sun" et une démo intitulée "Brooklyn". Max Rafferty quitte officiellement le groupe le 31 janvier 2008, à cause problèmes de drogues ainsi que de stress. Il est remplacé temporairement par le bassiste Dan Logan de Cat the Dog. Luke Pritchard révèle toutefois qu'il pourrait rejoindre le groupe de façon permanente, indiquant que jouer avec lui est bien plaisant.
