If you had listened to the radio during the summer of 1961, chances are that you would have heard the Cleftones’ recording of "Heart and Soul" written in 1938 by Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Loesser. Although recorded in 1959, it was not released until April 17, 1961. With an arrangement completely different from previous versions, it became a hit, reached No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 rhythm and blues charts in July, and sold 350,000 copies for Gee/Roulette Records. The song was included in the Cleftones’ first LP, Heart And Soul, released in June 1961 on Gee and is available on the 2 CD Set, Happy Memories - The Greatest Recordings Of The Cleftones on Jasmine Music. In 1973 it was featured in the popular film, American Graffiti. I do not own the right to the song, audio, or images contained in this video. The sound recording is administered by INgrooves.
