System of a Down (alias SOAD ou System) est un groupe de metal « alternatif » Américano-Arménien. Il est un des rares groupes à être parvenu à créer un style de metal alternatif unique en son genre et brisant tous les clichés, en particulier grâce au style particulier du chanteur Serj Tankian. Le groupe s'est ensuite tourné vers un style sensiblement différent à partir de l'album Mezmerize, souvent dénigré par les fans. Ses quatre membres sont d'origine arménienne, quoique nés au Liban, aux États-Unis ou en Arménie. Actuellement le groupe est en stand-by, mais ce n'est pas pour de bon, d'après les membres du groupe. Chacun croit a une meilleure carrière en solo. Les groupes formés : Serj Tankian et Scars on Broadway. Le but de la séparation : Revenir avec une nouvelle expérience et revenir avec un System Of A Down encore plus fort. Genre Musical System of a Down utilise de nombreux instruments différents, parmi lesquels guitares électriques, mandolines électriques, cithares, guitares classiques à 12 cordes, ou encore de nombreux instruments du Moyen-Orient. Black Sabbath ainsi que Slayer, vétérans du heavy metal, sont parmi leurs principales influences musicales, mais leur musique trouve aussi ses origines dans le jazz, la fusion, la musique traditionnelle arménienne, le rock classique, le blues, et le metal industriel. Malgré les influences de divers genres qui transparaissent à travers leur musique, notamment par l'utilisation d'instruments traditionnels orientaux, le groupe est souvent étiqueté nu metal, aussi bien par les fans et les médias et ce depuis que le groupe existe. Cela est probablement dû en partie au fait que leur premier album System Of A Down est sorti en plein « boom » du nu metal, dans la deuxième moitié ...
