Placebo est un groupe de rock créé en 1994 aux accents mélancoliques et romantiques exacerbés. Les tout premiers balbutiements du groupe se font entendre en 1994 à Deptford en Angleterre où Brian Molko et Steve Hewitt se réunissent pour jouer par intermittence dans les pubs et partager leurs infortunes. Brian ayant rencontré Stefan Olsdal, ancien camarade de classe à l'American School au Luxembourg, il lui propose d'assister à une des représentations et conquis, Stefan s'associe à Brian sous le nom d'Ashtray Heart pour composer tandis que Steve partage son activité entre Ashtray Heart, Breed et les Boo Radleys et n'est donc pas un membre permanent. C'est pourquoi en octobre 1994 Robert Schultzberg, ami d'enfance de Stefan, comble la place vacante et le trio se rebaptise Placebo. Le groupe enregistre ses premières démos en 1994, et en 1995 gagne sa place sur une compilation après un concours et y présente son "Bruise Pristine". À l'occasion du premier contrat signé chez Hut Recordings, sous label de Virgin, et de la création de son propre label Elevator Music, le groupe enregistre son premier album éponyme avec Brad Wood qui sort le 17 Juillet 1996. L'album connaît un succès d'autant plus rapide que la presse à scandale britannique s'empare des paroles subversives et provocantes ainsi que de la personnalité de Brian Molko et tente de percer le mystère de l'ambiguïté sexuelle du groupe. Sex Drugs & Rock'n'roll, un cocktail efficace qui, associé à un rock incisif et pressant, conquiert le public. Mais les différentes attaques de la presse, le caractère haut en couleur du leader Brian Molko et ses relations difficiles avec Robert Schultzberg pousse ce dernier à quitter le groupe, très vite remplacé par Steve Hewitt qui reprend du service...
