Joy Division est un groupe de rock post-punk anglais formé en 1977 à Manchester, chef de file du courant cold wave. Il se dissout en mai 1980 après le suicide de son chanteur, Ian Curtis. Les trois membres restants du groupe continuent mais se rebaptisent "New Order" quelques mois plus tard. Plus de 34 ans après la disparition de Curtis, Joy Division reste une comète majeure du rock anglais par la puissance souterraine de sa musique, qui semble inaltérable. Un certain nombre de chansons et des premières démos ont été (ré-)edités en CD et de nouveaux ouvrages paraissent régulièrement sur le groupe. Il est impossible de comprendre la new wave sans connaître Joy Division. Leur tube incontournable dans les juke boxes anglais, Love Will Tear Us Apart, une des plus grandes chansons d'amour de l'Histoire du rock, place la romance crooner sur le thème de la déchirure. A l'opposé, Colony ou As You Said amérisent le son et le tempo vers une abstraction dérangeante parmi la pop mondiale. Les influences de Joy Division sont variées. On peut principalement citer MC5, les Stooges, le Velvet Underground, les Doors, Can, Kraftwerk, le reggae... Toutefois, comment expliquer le son de Joy Division ? Hors-scène, un cinquième membre, Martin Hannett (alias Martin Zero), prenait le relai du groupe et passait ses nuits à tordre les sons pour en tirer la quintessence. Il y laissa, semble-t-il, sa santé... Les réactions du groupe au matin étaient en général de l'ordre de "C'est quoi ce son ? Qu'est ce c'est que cette m... ?!". (Même réaction, en général, face aux textes de Ian Curtis). Comme quoi, les goûts et les couleurs... A noter que des éditions CD des mixtapes de M.
