George Benson est un guitariste, chanteur, et compositeur de jazz né le 22 mars 1943 à Pittsburgh en Pennsylvanie aux États-Unis. Il enregistre son premier album, The New Boss Guitar, en 1964, à l'âge de 21 ans, accompagné par « Brother » Jack McDuff au clavier, un organiste américain et chef d'orchestre soul. Benson commence en 1965 une carrière solo, avec le George Benson Quartet. Son talent est ensuite remarqué par Miles Davis, qui l'emploie sur l'album Miles in the Sky, sorti en 1967. Sa carrière décolle véritablement dans la seconde moitié des années 1970, dans une veine jazz-funk, avec les albums Breezin (sorti fin 1975, dont le titre This Masquerade remporte le Grammy Award du disque de l'année en 1977) et In Flight (1977), emblématiques du jeu très particulier de Benson à la guitare, qui chante simultanément les notes des solos qu'il improvise, avec un phrasé jazz sur un rythme et des arrangements funk. Le point culminant de sa carrière est l'album Give Me The Night, produit par Quincy Jones (1980), et le morceau éponyme, qui a fait de George Benson une figure désormais incontournable des dancefloors, parfois par samples interposés (Give Me The Night a notamment été samplé, en France, par le groupe IAM pour son tube "Le Mia"). Aujourd'hui installé dans le New Jersey, il poursuit sa carrière, et a sorti en 2006 l'album Givin' It Up, en collaboration avec le chanteur Al Jarreau.
