Erykah Badu, née Erica Wright le 26 février 1971 à Dallas aux États-Unis, revendique ses origines africaines (elle est originaire du Bénin). Son style et sa rythmique sont proches du soul/hip hop/jazz. Elle commence sa carrière musicale à l'école avec un duo rap sous le pseudo de MC Apples. Rentrée à la Louisiana's Grambling State University, elle prend la décision en 1993 de se consacrer à plein temps à la musique. De retour à Dallas elle crée avec son cousin, le groupe hip hop Erykah Free. Elle fera par la suite avec Tim Grace, les premières parties de A Tribe Called Quest, Method Man et Arrested Development. Elle ouvre également pour D'Angelo en 1995. Erikah Badu quitte dallas pour enregistrer son premier album solo Baduizm à New York, 1997 (singles On & On et Next Lifetime). Elle sort ensuite son deuxième album Live qui se compose de morceaux de Baduizm en concert et des nouvelles chansons I'll Be The Moon et Tyrone. Erikah Badu donne naissance à son premier enfant qui s'appelle Seven et dont le père n'est autre que Andre Dre Benjamin du groupe OutKast (Andre 3000). Fin 2000, elle sort Mama's Gun et s'impose comme LA reine du mouvement Nu Soul (singles : Bag Lady, Didn't Cha Know et Cleva). En 2003, sort un nouvel album, Worldwide Underground, promu par les titres Danger et Back In The Day Le 26 février 2008 sort son quatrième album studio, New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), porté par les singles Honey et Soldier. La seconde partie de New Amerykah, Return Of The Ankh, est prévue pour l'automne 2008. Enfin, un troisième volet, Lowdown Loretta Brown viendra clôturer la série des New Amerykah en 2009. Elle a collaboré avec les plus grands noms du hip-hop US : The Roots (en featuring sur le titre "You Got Me"), Outkast, Rahzel, ...
