Coldplay est un groupe de pop rock anglais de Londres. Formé en 1998, Coldplay ont connu un succès mondial en 2000 avec leur single Yellow, suivi par leur premier album Parachutes. Le groupe est composé de Chris Martin (chant/guitare/piano), Jonny Buckland (guitare), Guy Berryman (basse) et Will Champion (batterie). Coldplay ont été comparé à beaucoup d’autres artistes tels que Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Travis, U2 mais aussi Echo And The Bunnymen, George Harrison, Johnny Cash ou encore Kraftwerk. Le groupe s’est également fait remarquer par leur participation active à certaines campagnes humanitaires dont celle qui leur tient le plus à cœur Make Trade Fair (campagne pour le commerce équitable). Accusés par certains bien injustement d'avoir honteusement plagié le catalogue de Radiohead & de l'avoir aseptisé; le groupe continue cependant son bonhomme de chemin... Les membres du groupe se rencontrent à l’université de Londres, d’abord Chris et Jonny, bientôt rejoints par Guy puis par Will au début de l’année 1998. D’abord connu sous le nom de Starfish, ils commencent par faire des petits concerts dans les clubs alentour. Ils choisissent enfin de changer leur nom et deviennent Coldplay (nom emprunté à un autre groupe ami). En mai 1998, ils sortent leur premier EP Safety (500 copies). Ils sont ensuite repérés et signés sur le label Fierce Panda, sous lequel ils enregistrent un autre EP Brothers And Sisters (2 500 copies). Déjà, l’intérêt du public monte. Coldplay signent ensuite sur Parlophone au printemps 1999. Après leur première apparence au festival Glastonbury, le groupe rentre en studio et enregistre The Blue Room EP (non sans quelques disputes et tumultes) qui sortira en Octobre au nombre de 5 000 copies.
