Growing up in the beautiful setting of the Worcestershire countryside in England, he began his lifelong relationship with this enchanting instrument at the age of 4 and continues to inspire audiences across the world with his deeply expressive playing and engaging character. He is widely recognised for presenting beautifully varied concert programmes, his captivating stage-persona, and his ability to summon forth a huge variety of tone-colours from his special handmade instrument. His years of studies and practice have contributed to him being able to communicate the most nuanced of emotions through his musical interpretations. Following early studies at the Leeds College of Music, from which he graduated with first-class honours, Durrant then went on to study privately with the world-renowned classical guitarist, maestro Carlos Bonell at the Royal College of Music, London. Not content with being limited by the standard repertoire of the instrument, Michael Christian Durrant is a rare thing; a classical musician who transcends the classical world: “There is a great potential for one, as a classical guitarist, to also explore other musical styles. For example: jazz, rock and flamenco, and I am very interested in forging bridges between the many distinct and colourful genres by applying the classical guitar technique.” says Durrant. A truly international artist, as well as performing throughout the UK at venues including the majestic Winchester Cathedral, his touring has taken him to countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Canada, USA, Brazil, Spain, Italy, France, Vietnam, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Croatia, Andorra and the Caribbean. Further to this, Durrant continues to perform all over the world as a guest entertainer on luxury cruise liners including Cunard’s world famous Queen Mary 2. Here is a young artist that has already achieved so much yet, although one may dwell on the past, it is a future full of possibility that holds the most excitement for Michael Christian Durrant. With a series of exciting collaborative projects (Guitar, the Heart of Spain and Duo Corda) evolving alongside the development of a collection of new album releases and future concerto performances, the forthcoming year promises to be a hugely exciting time for this dynamic, creative artist.
