Boney M.'s Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord topped the charts all over Europe when released on Nov. 27, 1978 and has since become a Christmas classic. It would however be another three years before a full Christmas album was released, only a month after the group's fifth LP Boonoonoonoos had been released late October '81. The Christmas Album, recorded in the summer of '81 with a choir of London Session Singers, had originally been promised as a solo project for lead singer Liz Mitchell, but with Bobby Farrell being fired from the group, producer Frank Farian chose to release it as a Boney M. album. Little Drummer Boy was released as a single from the album and reached #20 in the German charts. In November '82 Zion's Daughter/White Christmas followed as the second single in Germany, while Scandinavia chose Feliz Navidad. Spain opted for Jingle Bells as the second single and even followed up with a third single in 1983 with White Christmas. The LP proved a best-selling Christmas Album. Frank Farian initiated a follow-up album in 1984 but left it midway. Instead the new sessions were compiled with remixed and original tracks from the 1981 album and issued as The 20 Greatest Christmas Songs in 1986. Several more compilations have followed right up to Farian's 2017 project Worldmusic For Christmas, credited to Boney M. and Friends. I have expanded the original 1981 album by including the full version of Mary's Boy Child (running one minute longer), a faulty version of White Christmas on which one of Liz' lines has accidentally been muted, some of the 1986 remixes, and the rare original UK version of Silent Night, Holy Night which has Liz singing all three verses in English.
