Nesta Robert Marley dit Bob Marley était un chanteur de reggae né à Nine Miles, paroisse de Saint Ann (Jamaïque) le 6 février 1945 et décédé d'un cancer de la peau à Miami (Floride, États-Unis d'Amérique) le 11 mai 1981. Biographie : Bob Marley est né d'une mère jamaïcaine noire âgée de 18 ans, Cedella Marley Booker, née Malcolm, et d'un père jamaïcain blanc d'origine anglaise et plus lointainement musulman syrienne, superviseur à cheval des travaux des champs et âgé d'une cinquantaine d'années, Norval Marley, qu'il n'a que très peu connu. Les parents de Norval Marley n'acceptaient apparemment pas sa liaison avec une femme noire, et Norval, décrit par Cedella comme un homme gentil, mais de faible caractère, aurait été rejeté par sa famille. Bob Marley souffre de l'absence de son père, qui le fait venir à la capitale pour étudier quand il a cinq ou six ans. Sans nouvelles, sa mère le retrouvera des mois plus tard dans une rue de Kingston : son fils avait été confié à une vieille dame, pour qui il faisait les courses. Cedella voit Norval une dernière fois et reprend son enfant. Période Ska : À son adolescence, Nesta quitte la misère de la campagne pour celle du ghetto de Trenchtown à Kingston. Il y rencontre Neville Livingston dit Bunny Wailer et Winston Hubert McIntosh dit Peter Tosh, avec qui il chante des cantiques et des succès de soul américaine qu'ils entendent sur les radios de Miami. Le chanteur Joe Higgs leur donne des cours de chant. Bob Marley enregistre pour le producteur Leslie Kong ses deux premiers titres Judge Not et une reprise d'un succès de country & western de Claude Gray, One Cup of Coffee en 1962 alors qu'il est âgé de 17 ans.
