Bill Evans est né le 16 août 1929 à Plainfield (New-Jersey). Son père, d'origine galloise, et sa mère, d'origine russe, sont mélomanes. Ils lui font étudier le piano et en « second instrument » le violon (qu'il abandonnera au bout de deux ans) puis la flûte. Adolescent, il commence à s'intéresser au jazz, et en particulier à Bud Powell, Nat King Cole, George Shearing et Lennie Tristano ; il joue dans des orchestres amateurs locaux.
