Leading his crack six-piece band, Orleans Avenue, Trombone Shorty, aka Troy Andrews, tore through a 100-plus-minute set as though his very life depended on it. This irresistible mix of rock, R & B, funk and jazz — Shorty calls it "supafunkrock" — was delivered with mind-boggling energy and technical prowess. Trombone Shorty is the band's leader, lead vocalist and trombonist. Sporting sunglasses at night, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, the 25-year-old led the musical charge with the kind of exuberant joie de vivre that — at least in spirit — recalled Sly Stone. When Shorty plays trombone, he does so with tremendous lung-power. Incredibly, during one song, he held a single, continuous note for three verses, a chorus, and then another verse. (Circular breathing?) Orleans Avenue met the challenge laid down by by their leader. Drums, congas, guitar, baritone sax, tenor sax where all played flat-out, with the sort of facility honed by night after night of live performances. On recordings these guys are good — in concert, they were on fire.
