Le Hollandais Tijs Verwest débuta en tant que DJ amateur à l'âge précoce de 14 ans. Après une courte période House, il s'orienta bien vite vers le Goa/Trance. Le style des premières années professionnelles de Tiësto était fortement apprécié par les amateurs de raves, et on pourrait dire qu'il était en quelque sorte formulé pour ceux-ci : les rythmes typiquement Trance qu'il employait à cette époque ne sortaient que rarement du carcan associé a ce style musical, bien que le DJ ajoutait des éléments mélodiques et créatifs suggérant déja son évolution future. Ceci n'implique pas que son matériel n'était pas intéressant : c'était déja la crème du genre. Après quelques années, le style personnel de DJ Tiësto avait gagné un bon niveau de reconnaissance au plan national, et ce n'était qu'une question de temps avant que son succès ne gagne la scène internationale. Il commença à produire ses propres albums, à l'aide de son studio personnel. Adepte de la philosophie de F.L.T.M.*, Tiësto fonda sa propre maison de disques, Guardian Angel, une subdivision de Basic-Beat. Les premières productions provenant de celle-ci furent les séries Lost Treasures (numéros 1 a 3) et Forbidden Paradise (numéros 1 a 7). La carrière de Tiësto devenant de plus en plus importante, il décida de se couper de l'influence de Basic-Beat en fondant une maison de disques complètement indépendante, la fameuse Black Hole Recordings. La première production en résultant fut le premier opus de la série Magik (First Flight), une production qui obtint beaucoup de succès en Hollande et au sein des pays scandinaves.
