Longtemps considéré comme un des groupes les plus innovants et captivants de la scène pop contemporaine britannique, The Verve fit finalement surface en 1997 avec le succès immédiat de Bittersweet Symphony. Outre ce fulgurant succès, la montée du groupe fut en réalité l’aboutissement d’un long et éprouvant voyage qui débuta à l’aube des années 1990 et dont le déroulement fut perturbé par une séparation, de multiples poursuites judiciaires, ainsi qu’une importante consommation de narcotiques. Avec leur son océanique, associant la vision exploratoire du psychédélisme des années 1960 et de chatoyantes et esthétiques atmosphères, The Verve se languissait dans une relative obscurité avant de faire surface dans le monde musical, donnant ainsi naissance à une des plus complexe et remarquable évolution en matière de rock moderne et cela bien avant que la plupart ne connaissent même leur existence. 1989 - 1998 Tout d’abord connus simplement sous le nom de Verve, le groupe se forma en 1989 à Wigan, une petite ville du nord de l’Angleterre. Mené par le magnétique Richard Ashcroft, la composition originale du groupe comprenait le guitariste Nick McCabe, le bassiste Simon Jones et le batteur Peter Salisbury. Partageant une même affection pour le rock et le funk (autant qu’une même attirance pour le psychédélisme), le quatuor signa avec le label Hut records en à peine quelques mois. En 1992, le single All in the Mind est le premier d’une série de titres indie qui bénéficièrent notamment du captivant travail du designer Brian Cannon pour les jaquettes.
