The Temptations est un groupe de doo-wop, soul, rock psychédélique, funk, disco et R&B américain fondé en 1960. Le groupe naît à Detroit aux Etats-Unis au début des années 60. Otis Williams, Paul Williams, Elbridge Bryant, Melvin Franklin et Eddie Kendricks forment The Temptations. Ils signent chez Motown et sortent plusieurs singles dont "Dream Come True" (1962) qui remporte un franc succès. En 1964, Elbridge Bryant est remplacé par David Ruffin. A partir de là, la carrière du groupe décolle : il place 37 morceaux dans le Top Ten. Il signe les albums "Meet the Temptations" (1964), "Sing Smokey" (1965), "The Temptin' Temptations" (1965) et "Getting Ready" (1966). En 1968, David Ruffin est remplacé par Damon Harris. The Temptations signent alors entre autre "With a Lot o' Soul" (1967), "I Wish It Would Rain" (1968), "Cloud Nine" (1969) et "The Chrismas Card" (1970). En 1971, Eddie Kendricks et Paul Williams se lancent dans des carrières solo. Ils sont remplacés par Damon Harris et Richard Street. En 1972, le groupe signe le hit "Papa was a Rolling Stone". La popularité du groupe va en diminuant et The Temptations quittent Motown pour se tourner vers la disco avec les albums "Bare Back" et "Hear To Tempt You" (1978). David Ruffin et Eddie Kendricks reviennent en 1982 pour l'album "Reunion", dernier album intéressant de la formation.
