Issus de familles aisées, le chanteur Julian Casablancas et le guitariste Albert Hammond Jr se rencontrent alors qu'ils sont élèves dans une pension en Suisse et se mettent à faire de la musique ensemble. C'est à New York, en 1998, qu'ils forment leur quintette de beaux gosses avec quelques copains et sont remarqués par le producteur Gordon Raphael, qui accouche de leur EP, The Modern Age, puis de leur premier album, le très remarqué Is This It. Un mois durant, les Strokes furent les maîtres du monde. Le disque est salué par la presse, Kate Moss, Courtney Love, les frères Gallagher ou Joe Strummer se prosternent à leurs pieds, une génération les vénères. En 2003, Room On Fire est moins bien accueilli, mais la chanson « The End Has No End » devient un hit en France suite à son utilisation dans une pub télé. Avec First Impressions On Earth en 2006, le groupe obtient son premier numéro un anglais et continue de drainer les foules. Si Julian Casablancas est le principal songwriter du groupe, les autres membres composent aussi, ainsi Albert Hammond Jr, qui publie en 2007 un album solo, Yours To Keep, assez été bien accueilli. Il est clair que la nouvelle scène rock parisienne (Naast, Parisians, Shades, etc.) doit beaucoup au garage vintage des années soixante mais aussi et surtout aux Strokes, dans la musique comme dans le look. Après les escapades en solo d'Albert Hammond, Nikolai Fraiture (avec Nickel Eye) et de Julian Casablancas (Phrazes for the Young en 2009), c'est un groupe au bord de l'implosion qui se retrouve en studio pour le quatrième opus Angles sorti en mars 2011.
