The Smiths est un groupe de rock anglais créé en 1982 et séparé en 1987. C'était un quatuor musical de Manchester fondé autour de Johnny Marr (né le 31 octobre 1963) et de Steven Patrick Morrissey (né le 22 mai 1959), chanteur et parolier. Morrissey et Marr (de son vrai nom Johnny Maher, mais il changea de nom pour ne pas être confondu avec le batteur des Buzzcocks) se sont rencontrés le 20 mai 1982 au domicile de Morrissey, à Stretford (384, Kings Road). Marr cherche alors depuis un certain nombre d'années un bon parolier, voire un chanteur, pour le groupe qu’il veut monter et se décide à rendre visite à Morrissey dont il connaît les textes de chansons par l'intermédiaire d'un ami, Billy Duffy (futur guitariste de The Cult), ancien membre d'un groupe dont Morrissey était le chanteur, The Nosebleeds. Morrissey lui présente quelques textes qu’il a écrit, dont Suffer Little Children (un texte trouble inspiré d’un fait divers sordide de meurtres d'enfants dont l’évocation était à l’époque tabou à Manchester). Le duo s’étoffe bientôt d’un bassiste, Andy Rourke, un copain d’école de Johnny Marr, et d’un batteur, Mick Joyce, issu de la scène punk (Victim, The Hoax). Le nouveau groupe s’appellera The Smiths. « Tous les groupes de l’époque avaient des noms de quinze syllabes. Nous, on voulait seulement être normaux » (Johnny Marr). Morrissey s’improvisant chanteur, le quatuor se produit pour la première fois en public au Manchester Ritz le 4 octobre 1982. Leur premier single, Hand in Glove (de connivence) publié en mai 1983 sur le label indépendant Rough Trade, fascine le public.
