Le groupe américain The Shins a été formé à la fin des années 1990 par d'anciens membres de Flake Music suite à la dissolution de celui-ci. Il est composé de James Russell Mercer (chant, guitare), Dave Hernandez (basse), Martin Crandall (claviers), Jesse Sandoval (batterie) et Eric Johnson qui a rejoint le groupe lors de leur tournée pour Wincing The Night Away. Leur musique est généralement qualifiée de rock indépendant, surfant sur plusieurs genres musicaux tels que la pop (dans la lignée des Beach Boys), les musiques country et folk. Mercer, Crandall et Sandoval, anciens membres du groupe Flake Music, forment The Shins en 1997 et sont rejoints par le bassiste Dave Hernandez, qui faisait auparavant partie de Scared of Chaka. Les deux premiers singles des Shins, Nature Bears A Vacuum et When I Goose-Step, sont édités par le label Omnibus. Lors d'une tournée effectuée en compagnie de Modest Mouse, un représentant du label Sub Pop leur propose un contrat. Oh, Inverted World, leur premier album, est édité par le label de Seattle en 2001. Caring is Creepy et New Slang, deux morceaux issus du disque, figurent sur la bande originale du film Garden State réalisé par Zach Braff.
