The Killers se compose Brandon Richard Flowers (né le 21 juin 1981 à Las Vegas, Nevada) au chant et aux claviers, David Brent Keuning (né le 28 mars 1976 à Pella dans l’Iowa) à la guitare, Ronald Vannucci Jr (né le 15 février 1976 à Las Vegas) à la batterie et Mark August Stoermer (né le 28 juin 1977 au Texas) à la basse. La formation tient son nom d’un groupe imaginé par New Order dans le clip de « Crystal », dans lequel « The Killers » est écrit sur la grosse caisse de la batterie. Référence donc, à un groupe fétiche des quatre jeunes musiciens. Une seconde version indique une référence à une nouvelle d’Ernest Hemingway. En 2002, le groupe Blush Response décide de migrer vers Los Angeles : l’un de ses membres, Brandon Flowers ne l’entend pas de cette oreille et décide de rester à Las Vegas, quitte à faire une croix sur sa formation jazzy. Alors groom au Gold Coast Hotel, il tombe sur une annonce postée par David Keuning, alors vendeur dans une boutique de vêtements, dans le Las Vegas Weekly. Les deux musiciens lient connaissance et composent rapidement un de leurs premiers tubes : « J’avais le couplet de « Mr. Brightside » et Brandon m’a écrit le refrain », se souvient Keuning. Convaincus par le potentiel de leur premier morceau et portés par leurs influences communes (Oasis, New Order, The Cure et Joy Division), ils sélectionnent au cours de plusieurs auditions, Mark Stoermer (coursier médical et étudiant en philosophie) à la basse et Ronald Vannucci, Jr. (photographe dans une chapelle et étudiant en percussions) à la batterie. Les premières répétitions se font tantôt dans les locaux musicaux de l’université de Ronnie, tantôt dans un garage où la chaleur est écrasante. C’est ainsi que The Killers ...
