The Beatles, composé de John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison et Ringo Starr, fut un groupe de rock et pop anglais, qui demeure, en dépit de la séparation de ses membres en 1970, l'un des groupes de rock les plus populaires au monde. En 12 ans d'existence, et seulement sept ans de carrière discographique, les Beatles firent paraître 12 albums, de 1962 à 1970, et composèrent plus de 200 chansons. Les chansons des Beatles ont marqué les années 1960 et les générations suivantes et leurs mélodies ont été adaptées à de nombreux styles musicaux, notamment le jazz ou le classique (symphonique). Aujourd'hui, le groupe jouit toujours d'une grande popularité, leurs chansons sont jouées et reprises dans le monde entier. Les auteurs-compositeurs John Lennon et Paul McCartney (connus en duo sous le nom de Lennon & McCartney) restent célèbres comme créateurs de standards qui ont fait l'objet de quelques milliers d'adaptations dans les décennies qui suivirent. Les Beatles demeurent les artistes ayant vendu le plus grand nombre de disques au monde. Le dernier chiffre publié (dans les années 1980) dénombrait plus de 1 milliard de disques et de vinyles vendus à travers la planète.
