Steely Dan est un groupe américain créé en 1972 par Donald Fagen et Walter Becker. Ils mettent fin à l'aventure en 1981, entamant des carrières solos avant de faire revivre la formation en 2000. Leur musique est influencée par le jazz, le blues et le style West Coast, sophistiquée, distinguée, faite d’harmonies et d'allusion lyriques complexes ainsi que d’accroches mélodiques variées. Steely Dan transforme la chanson la plus ordinaire en un mille-feuille fort compliqué à difficile à décortiquer. Les années Steely Dan se découpent aisément en plusieurs phases bien distinctes. Aux premières années où ils assurent des tournées suit une carrière exclusivement en studio. Puis c'est la séparation et les carrières solo avec collaborations multiples. Vient enfin la reformation 20 ans après la genèse, reformation qui dure jusqu'à nos jours. Donald Fagen est né à Passaic, New Jersey (banlieue ouest de la ville de New York) le 10 janvier 1948 alors que Walter Becker est né le 20 février 1950 dans la ville de New York. Les deux ont grandi dans ces banlieues américaines en explosion du début des années 50. Ils se connaissent au lycée, partagent un goût commun pour le jazz avec Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington ou John Coltrane, le blues, la musique populaire et la littérature contemporaine, en particulier les poètes de la Beat Generation. En 1968, ils écrivent leurs premières chansons qu'ils jouent dans divers petits concerts. Ils tentent de revendre leur travail d'écriture et de composition et finissent par passer un accord en 1969 avec Jay and the Americans avec lesquels ils effectuent une tournée, collaborant avec eux pendant pas loin de deux ans.
