DeAndre Cortez Way, mieux connu sous le nom de Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, ou simplement Soulja Boy est né à Chicago, dans l'Illinois, le 28 juillet 1990. Il a été élevé de façon modeste par sa mère et grand-mère maternelle. Il dit qu'il chante le rap pour la première fois à l'âge de 5 ans à Shy-Town, abréviation de "Chicago-Town". En 1996, sa mère et lui ont déménagé à Atlanta, en Géorgie. Atlanta est l'endroit où il a appris à faire ses premiers pas dans la musique et à danser. La musique Snap, un sous-genre du crunk, commençait à voir le jour pendant qu'il était à Atlanta. À l'âge de 14 ans, il s'installe à Batesville, à 60 km au sud de Memphis, avec son père Tracy, plus à l'aise matériellement. C'est à Batesville qu'il va puiser ses dernières influences musicales et construire le propre univers de son rap. Son père lui achète un ordinateur portable et de quoi faire un mini studio dans la maison. Le reste appartient à l'histoire. Il a commencé par mettre certains de ces titres sur le site SouljaBoytellem.com et le succès était au rendez-vous. Les gens aimaient beaucoup sa façon différente, mais très originale de danser, rapper et innover dans la musique Snap. Quand les gens lui demandaient ses origines, il disait : "Shylantaville ou Shylantasippi". Une façon pour lui, d'expliquer son attachement à des multiples villes. "Shy" vient de Chicago parce qu'elle est appelée Shy-Town, "Lanta" vient d'Atlanta, "Ville" vient de Batesville, et le "Sippi" du Mississippi.
