Samuel Frederick « Sam » Smith, né le 19 mai 1992, est un chanteur et compositeur anglais. Sam Smith est né le 19 mai 1992, à Londres. Il est le fils d'un père au foyer et d'une mère banquière à la City, qui pouvait gagner 500 000 £ par an. En 2009, sa mère est licenciée pour avoir consacré trop de temps à la carrière de son fils, au détriment de son travail, ce qu'elle nie. Il est le cousin d'Alfie Owen-Allen et Lily Allen. À l'âge de 18 ans, il rejoint Londres pour tenter sa chance dans le monde de la musique et devient barman et babysitteur pour vivre. Jimmy Napes présente Sam Smith au duo Disclosure. Fin 2012, il chante sur leur single Latch, qui devient un tube, notamment au Royaume-Uni où il se classe en 11e position des meilleures ventes. Il sort son premier single, Lay Me Down, en février 2013 mais la chanson rencontre un succès plus modéré. La même année, il participe à La La La de Naughty Boy. La chanson atteint la 1re place des charts au Royaume-Uni et en Italie et se classe parmi les cinq titres les plus vendus dans de nombreux pays européens ainsi qu'en Australie. Suite à ce succès, il sort durant l'été 2013 son premier EP, Nirvana, dont est extrait Stay with Me. Son premier album, In the Lonely Hour, entre directement en première position des charts britanniques en mai 2014.
