Polynesians have been using boards with sails for hundreds of years. It wasn’t until the 1960s that windsurf board design really developed and it became the sport we know today. Unlike surfing, windsurfing uses the wind to propel forward while surfing uses the force of waves. This means you can practice the sport anywhere with a big body of water and wind, such as lakes, rivers, estuaries and, of course, the open ocean. A special day for both Levi Siver and Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne The ninth day of the JP Aloha Classic - presented by Nalu Kai - was a day of firsts for two sailors, and one that neither of them will ever forget. Levi Siver (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) successfully defended his single elimination crown against the AWT champion Bernd Roediger (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) to claim his first ever win on the PWA World Tour. The prestigious JP Aloha Classic. Whilst Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) held his nerve in the title showdown against Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra) to deservedly be crowned the 2013 PWA Wave World Champion. The Brazilian’s first, of possibly many, wave world titles. After a stormy and slightly moody start to the day, which saw showers and heavy cloud cover, the action finally began at 12:15pm, as the synonymous Maui sunshine burned through, however there were still a number of squalls. The variable winds and mast high sets made for tricky conditions, resulting in a few masts and sails being sacrificed to the infamous reef and rocks of Ho’okipa. Double Elimination Title Decider The title decider saw two men - Marcilio Browne and Alex Mussolini - competing in a four-man heat against Josh Angulo (Angulo / Gun Sails) and Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins) for the 2013 PWA Wave World Championship. The heat was one of the most eagerly anticipated and high-pressured heats for a number of years, with both Browne and Mussolini looking to claim their maiden PWA Wave World titles. After an intense twenty-two minutes it was soon revealed that Browne had advanced, whilst crucially Mussolini, agonizingly missed out in third place as the two-time PWA Wave World Champion, Angulo, also advanced. Browne produced one terrific wave consisting of a powerful, vertical turn, straight into an incredible air taka and one more gouging hack to write his name in windsurfing history! The tension on the beach, as the result was revealed was palpable, Browne was soon overcome by a sense of disbelief and euphoria at the same time, whilst Mussolini saw his title dreams come to an end. However, Mussolini, can still hold his head high after achieving his best finish to date on the PWA World Tour - second - and he’ll be back stronger than ever for 2014. Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne speaks after capturing his maiden PWA Wave World Championship: “It’s my childhood dream, it’s what I’ve been working towards for my whole life and it’s finally come true, it’s unbelievable. It’s been a long week and as much as you try to think about it, it’s always there in the back of your mind, and now that it’s actually over and it’s done, it’s not a load off my back but I can relax. The last few days have been very tense for me.” “The first wave I went down in the first heat my legs were shaking, I’m not gonna lie, I’m just happy it worked out, had faith and got the job done.” Bernd Roediger produced one of the performances of the day in the battle for second and third against Kauli Seadi (JP / Hot Sails Maui / MFC). The AWT Champion landed the move of the day as he rotated through an amazing taka right in the critical section of the wave, which was received with rapturous applause on the beach. Seadi combined showcased his unique flowing style, but it wasn’t enough against an on fire Roediger, who set up a finale against Levi Siver.
