Queens of the Stone Age est un groupe de stoner rock californien fondé en 1996 après la dissolution du groupe Kyuss. A l'origine baptisé Gamma Ray par son guitariste et chanteur Josh Homme et son batteur Alfredo Hernandez, le groupe change pour Queens of the Stone Age ; en effet Gamma Ray était déjà utilisé par le célèbre groupe de speed metal allemand. En 1998 sort l'album Queens of the Stone Age qui connaît un succès immédiat. Peu après la fin de l'enregistrement, Nick Oliveri rejoint alors le groupe pour la tournée. Dans les années suivantes, les créations du groupe changent quelque peu, Hernandez quitte le groupe. En 2000 sort Rated R, album plus expérimental, bien accueilli par les critiques, mais qui fut un petit succès commercial. Cette année là, les Queens of the Stone Age font également les premières parties des Foo Fighters, de Hole... Il est à noter que Mark Lanegan est présent sur cet album. Le groupe se lie d'amitié pendant les tournées avec le leader des Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl, et enregistre avec celui ci leur 3ème album fin 2001. Ainsi sort en août 2002 Songs for the Deaf. Joey Castillo devient le batteur de la tournée et restera dans le groupe à plein temps. A noter à nouveau la présence de Mark Lanegan, ex Screaming Trees, qui chante sur certains morceaux de l'album et qui participe aux concerts à plein temps à partir de cette période. Songs for the Deaf est l'opus qui révéle véritablement le groupe au grand public, notamment grâce aux titres Go with the Flow et No one Knows, largement diffusés sur MTV et à la radio. Après d'importantes tournées, 2004 voit le départ de Oliveri, congédié par Homme. Il semble violent avec les fans et trop fêtard. Homme revient sur cette histoire en 2005 en déclarant à ...
