L’histoire en avait fait un groupe majeur des années 90. La fatalité l’inscrit à tout jamais au panthéon des artistes légendaires que seule la médiocrité insulte. Pourtant le Pantera des années 80, souvent peu connu du public (et pour cause, les albums sont quasiment introuvables), pratique un glam-rock totalement désuet de nos jours, mais pas dépourvu d’intérêt pour les plus curieux : le talent débordant de l’inégalable Dimebag Darrell se manifeste déjà à travers des solos exceptionnels. La formation originelle est composée des frères Darrell Abbott - Diamond Darrell (guitare) et Vinnie Paul Abbott (batterie) - auxquels s’ajoutent le fidèle bassiste Rex Brown et le chanteur Terrence Lee (alias Terry Glaze). Sous cette formation le groupe enregistre Metal Magic (1983), Projects in the Jungle (1984) et I Am the Night (1985). Ce n’est qu’en 1986 que Philip Anselmo rejoint Pantera en remplacement de Terrence Lee. En 1988 sort Power Metal, premier album du line-up « officiel » et dernier de l’ère glam-rock. Car en 1990, avec la sortie de Cowboys From Hell la machine Pantera est définitivement lancée. Foncièrement influencé par le mouvement thrash de l’époque dont la figure de proue est Anthrax, l’album peine à se démarquer, bien que certains titres fassent désormais partie des incontournables (Cowboys from hell, Domination, The art of shredding). En 1991, le groupe participe au mythique Monsters of Rock à Moscou et joue devant plusieurs centaines de milliers de personnes. 1992 est l’année de la consécration avec Vulgar Display Of Power, considéré comme le meilleur album du groupe.
