Nirvana est un groupe de musique rock américain considéré comme le révélateur de la mouvance grunge Fondé en 1987, le groupe se sépara en 1994 suite à la mort de son principal compositeur, chanteur et guitariste Kurt Cobain. Naissance du groupe Les origines du groupe Nirvana se situent à Aberdeen, Washington vers 1985 sous le premier nom de Fecal Matter. Ses premiers membres sont Kurt Cobain (guitare et voix), Dale Crover (également batteur des Melvins, ici à la basse) et Greg Hokanson à la batterie. Le groupe se sépare rapidement. Par la suite Kurt Cobain rejoint par son ami Krist Novoselic à la basse fonde plusieurs groupes éphémères avec différents batteurs dont Dale Crover qui joue sur la plupart de leurs premières démos. Le groupe finit par prendre le nom définitif de Nirvana, avec Chad Channing à la batterie. Ils assurent plusieurs concerts et enregistrent diverses démos. Après l'enregistrement de Bleach, Channing sera remplacé par Dave Grohl. Après avoir assisté à un concert d'un groupe dans lequel jouait Dave, Kurt et Krist sont littéralement tombés amoureux de ce batteur, ils savaient en l'engageant que c'était exactement la personne dont ils avaient besoin. Bleach En 1989, Nirvana réalise l'album Bleach. Le titre "Bleach" a été trouvé par Kurt Cobain en voyant des affiches de prévention contre la drogue affichant "bleach your works" (nettoyez à l'eau oxygénée vos seringues), alors que le groupe effectuait une mini-tournée en Californie. Cet album se vend assez peu mais obtient un petit succès critique. Il incarne à lui seul toute la noirceur et le nihilisme des débuts du mouvement grunge avec des rythmiques lourdes et puissantes, des riffs agressifs, une guitare apocalyptique et surtout la voix impressionnante ...
