Nina Simone, de son vrai nom Eunice Kathleen Waymon, née le 22 février 1933 à Tryon (Caroline du Nord) USA, décédée le 21 avril 2003 à Carry-le-Rouet (Bouches-du-Rhône) France, était une pianiste et chanteuse américaine. Elle avait choisi la première partie de son pseudonyme en raison d'un amant latino américain qu'elle affectionnait énormement et qui l'appellait "niña" (fille en espagnol) et la seconde partie de son pseudonyme en hommage à Simone Signoret. Son père et sa mère descendaient d'anciens esclaves. Ils étaient tous les deux des chrétiens très pratiquants s'attachant à transmettre des valeurs morales à leurs enfants. Elle était très attachée à son père mais sa mère était très distante envers elle, s'occupant peu de ses enfants, consacrant tout son temps à la religion et laissant les tâches ménagères à sa fille aînée Lucille. Avant la crise de 1929, sa famille vivait à l'aise. Après, sa mère fut obligée de travailler comme femme de ménage et son père accepta les tâches les plus ingrates. Une complication suite à une intervention chirurgicale subit par son père aggrava encore plus la situation financière obligeant la famille à déménager et à s'installer dans les quartiers les plus misérables de sa ville. Elle grandit en Caroline du Nord dans une famille de huit enfants dont elle était la sixième. Elle montre très tôt de grandes dispositions pour le chant et le piano qu’elle pratique à l’église. Elle est remarquée par Mrs Miller qui conseille à sa mère d'encourager ses dispositions. Mrs Miller créa un fonds pour recueillir de l'argent destinée à payer la formation d'Eunice. Elle proposa également de payer pendant un an les cours de piano de Eunice et la présenta à Muriel Massinovitch "Miss ...
