Description of the artist Muse

Elèves du même lycée de Teignmouth (Devon, sud-ouest de l'Angleterre), trois adolescents impliqués dans différents groupes décident de rassembler leurs qualités. C'est ainsi que le batteur Dominic Howard (né le 7 décembre 1977) et le guitariste Matthew Bellamy (né le 9 juin 1978) proposent à Christopher Wolstenholme (né le 2 décembre 1978) - initialement batteur, mais qui doit apprendre la basse pour intégrer le trio - de les rejoindre ; ensemble, ils forment Gothic Plague, transformé en Fixed Penalty puis Rocket Baby Dolls, en 1994. En 1997, le trio abandonne les études, change de nom et devient Muse. Le groupe participe bientôt à un tremplin du type Battle of the bands qu'il remporte, à sa grande surprise. Fort de ce succès, Muse quitte Teignmouth et donne quelques concerts, jouant notamment à Londres ou Manchester. Une rencontre avec Dennis Smith, du label Sawmills, leur permet d'obtenir deux journées d'enregistrement dans son studio des Cornouailles (dans lequel Oasis a enregistré) que le groupe remboursera s'il obtient un contrat. S'ensuivent deux EP chez Dangerous Records. Le second, Muscle Museum, attire l'attention de la presse spécialisée. La carrière de Muse est sur le point de décoller. Dennis Smith, confiant en ses poulains, leur imagine une carrière fulgurante et décide même de créer Taste Media, société de production uniquement dédiée au trio. En 1998, lors d'un concert devant des professionnels de la musique à Manchester puis une apparition au CMJ Festival de New York, Muse séduit le label Maverick, qui leur fait signer un contrat la veille de Noël (grâce à l'homme qui avait repéré les Deftones à Los Angeles, quelques années auparavant).
