Description of the artist Massive Attack
Massive Attack est un groupe britannique originaire de Bristol et précurseur de la musique trip hop. Il se compose à l'origine de Robert Del Naja (3D), Grant Marshall (Daddy G) et Andrew Vowles (Mushroom). Le style du groupe, toujours en avance sur son temps, va évoluer : d'abord proche du hip-hop, du groove voire de la soul, il se rapprochera de l'électronique à la fin des années 1990. En désaccord avec l'évolution du style musical, Mushroom a quitté le groupe à la sortie de l'album Mezzanine, en 1998. Bristol, fin des années 1980. Cameron McVey, mari et manager de la chanteuse Neneh Cherry, rencontre trois jeunes DJ et producteurs issus d'un sound-system local : The Wild Bunch. Pressentant un succès discographique possible, il leur propose d'aller en studio pour composer un disque. 3D se souvient : « Cameron McVey a senti un potentiel en nous et il nous a proposé de travailler ça. Nous ne le voulions pas vraiment, nous n'étions pas au bon endroit pour ça et ce n'était vraiment qu'un essai, mais ça a fonctionné. » Cet essai fût baptisé Blue Lines et il posa ni plus ni moins que les bases du grand melting pot sonore des années 1990 et du trip hop en particulier. Mais à peine le succès consommé que les contradictions les rattrapent. Après le succès de Blue Lines, le groupe décide de prendre son indépendance vis à vis de Cameron McVey, mais sans vraiment savoir dans quelle direction aller. Aussi, insatisfaite de la collaboration et de certains droits d'auteurs qui lui incombent, la chanteuse Shara Nelson quitte le navire Blue Lines. La voix Shara Nelson puissante, rocailleuse et à la fois envoutante sur les morceaux "Safe From Harm", "Daydreaming" mais surtout "Unfinished Sympathy" hymne à la fois pionnier et culte du mouvement trip ...
