Johnny Cash (26 février 1932 à Kingsland, Arkansas - 12 septembre 2003 à Nashville, Tennessee) est un chanteur et compositeur de musique country américain, généralement considéré comme un des plus importants chanteurs de sa génération. Il est aussi connu pour son engagement politique et son action en faveur des détenus pénitentiaires. Cash grandit dans l'univers des champs de coton du sud des États-Unis. La musique était partie intégrante de la vie rurale américaine et le jeune Johnny s’imprègne, à cette époque, de différentes influences telles que : le folk, les hymnes religieux et le country. Après plusieurs expériences de travail difficile dans plusieurs domaines, Cash s’enrôle dans l’Air Force et est envoyé en Allemagne, où il achète sa première guitare et forme son premier groupe. À son retour, il s’établit à Memphis dans le Tennessee et épouse Vivian Liberto. En 1954, Johnny Cash auditionne pour la maison de disque de Sam Phillips, Sun Records. Le printemps suivant, il enregistre, à l’aide de son groupe The Tennessee Three (Luther Perkins à la guitare, Marshall Grant à la contrebasse et Red Kernodle à la « pedal steel »), son premier 45 tours Hey Porter. Dès lors, les succès s'enchaînent : Cry, Cry, Cry, Folsom Prison Blues et I Walk the Line. En 1957, à la recherche de plus de liberté artistique, le chanteur décide de signer avec la compagnie de disque Columbia. Sur cette étiquette, Cash enregistre au début des années 1960, Don’t Take Your Guns to Town et The Ballad of Ira Hayes.
