Johann Sebastian Bach (parfois écrit en français Jean-Sébastien Bach) est un compositeur et organiste allemand, (21 mars 1685, à Eisenach - 28 juillet 1750, à Leipzig). Compositeur de l'époque baroque dont il symbolise et personnifie l'apogée, il eut une influence majeure et durable dans le développement de la musique occidentale ; des compositeurs très connus, tels que Mozart et Beethoven, reconnurent en lui un maître insurpassable. Son œuvre est remarquable en tous points : par sa rigueur et sa richesse harmonique, mélodique ou contrapuntique, sa perfection formelle, sa maîtrise technique, sa pédagogie, la hauteur de son inspiration et le nombre de ses compositions. Elle échappe à la gradation traditionnelle avec la formation, la période de maturité puis le déclin : la qualité des œuvres de jeunesse égale celle des compositions plus tardives. Il n'est pas exceptionnel de le considérer comme le plus grand compositeur de tous les temps. Johann Sebastian Bach naît le 21 mars 1685 dans une famille de musiciens (dont il est le huitième enfant) exerçant depuis plusieurs générations comme musiciens de cour, de ville ou d'église dans la région de Thuringe (Allemagne). Il se situe à la cinquième génération depuis le premier ancêtre connu, un certain Veit Bach qui serait venu au XVIe siècle de Hongrie, meunier et musicien amateur. À sa naissance, les Bach qui pratiquent la musique sont plusieurs dizaines ; il s'agit de la plus importante famille de musiciens connue dans toute l'histoire de la musique occidentale. La date du 21 mars est celle du calendrier julien alors en usage à Eisenach, la date selon le calendrier grégorien serait le 31 mars (c'est la date grégorienne qui est retenue pour son décès à Leipzig).
