This video was made during an annual family reunion at Lake Manawa State Park, near Council Bluffs Iowa. This family has been roasting a lamb every year for sixty years and they graciously allowed me to record their efforts. As way of introduction I would like to point out that the sixty pound lamb came from a Nebraska butcher shop that mistakenly split the hips. The stainless steel "spit" is ordinarily difficult to use and the butchers error added some extra time (and cuss words) to a routine preparation. The State Park has a full service picnic shelter, that can be rented, which allows users to maintain excellent sanitary conditions as the meat is seasoned and mounted on the spit. The equipment used is owned by the family and some of the motors are close to fifty years old. The stainless steel spits have replaced the old wooden rods which tended to deteriorate over time. I recorded (and condensed for time) the numerous small tasks which are required to mount and season the lamb. I kept recording as the lamb was put over the coals along with three 22# turkeys. I made sure to record more clips during the six hour roasting time. The reason you won't see it come off the fire is that I was "volunteered" to help with the cutting of the cooked meat. I have no regrets as the cutting table is a great place to snack on an incredible tasting roast lamb. There is no narration, or graphical explanation, just some small talk of a bunch of good folks who have been doing this for a very long time. At the end I included a couple quick shots of the picnic shelter and the food serving line. Enjoy! (The Lake Manawa Picnic Shelter lost a good friend when John Ohme passed away in 2014. He was a Lake Manawa resident and part of the team that conceived and built the shelter. John was good friend of the family and would always come out to help with our lamb roasts. We'll miss you "Uncle" John! ) Also, there is some additional information to be found within the comment threads......
