While the Penguins were launching Doo Wop music on the West Coast, five friends from Jamaica High School in Queens, NY on Long Island were helping to launch Doo Wop on the East Coast. Herbie Cox, Warren Corbin, Charlie James, William "Buzzie" McClain, and Berman Patterson were originally signed by George Goldner to Gee Records. The Cleftones released their first single, "You Baby You," late in December, 1955; right after Rosa Parks had been arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for not giving up her seat to a white person. It was a regional hit. But their second recording "Little Girl of Mine," gave the Cleftones' their first national hit. Herbie Cox tells Tom the story of how it all happened in the mid-1950s.
