Dropkick Murphys est un groupe de punk oi celtique formé en 1996 à Boston. Il était composé à ses débuts de Ken Casey à la basse, Mike Mc Colgan au chant et Rick Barton à la guitare. Après de multiples recherches, le trio trouve son batteur, Matt Kelly, en 1997. Le groupe sort son premier album en 1998 : Do or Die. Peu après, en 1999, Mc Colgan, le chanteur, quitte le groupe et laisse sa place à Al Barr, ancien membre du groupe The Bruisers. Puis c'est le tour de Rick Barton, à la guitare, de quitter le groupe en laissant son successeur à la guitare: James Lynch des Ducky Boys. Au passage, le groupe recrute un second guitariste: Marc Orrell surnommé le kid en raison de son jeune age (il rejoint le groupe à 17 ans). Les Dropkick Murphys font aussi appel à un joueur de cornemuse Robbie "Spicy Mc Haggis" Meideros et à Ryan Foltz à la mandoline et au tin whistle. Spicy quitte le groupe pour se marier, après le troisième album. Il laissera sa trace dans l'album avec une chanson d'adieu The Spicy Mc Haggis Jig. Il sera remplacé par Josh "Scruffy" Wallace. Les Dropkick Murphys sont aussi de fervents supporters des Red Sox, l'équipe de baseball de Boston. Leur dernier album The Warrior's Code contient une reprise de Tessie, l'hymne des fans de cette équipe. Ce morceau apparaît également dans la bande-son du film Terrain d'entente avec Drew Barrymore et Jimmy Fallon.
