- Composer: Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637/1639 -- 9 May 1707) - Performers: Andreas Scholl (countertenor), Markus Märkl (positive), Friederike Heumann (bass viola da gamba), Friederike Heumann (alto viola da gamba), Brigitte Gasser (bass viola da gamba) - Year of recording: 1997 Cantata Klag-lied ''Muß der Tod denn auch entbinden'' BuxWV76, written in 1674. "Muß der Tod denn auch entbinden", better known as Klag-Lied (BuxWV76/2) is an elegy composed by Dieterich Buxtehude in tribute to his father's death, which occurred on 22 January 1674. The piece was published in the same year together with the counterpoint "Mit Fried und Freud", which was composed in 1671 for the death of Superintendent Menno Hanneken in a booklet entitled Fried-und Freudenreiche Hinfahrt ("Depart in peace and joy"). This song of lamentation occurs in a purely strophic aria, the seven stanzas of text (Scholl sings only 5 here) merging without sinfonia introduction or refrain. For the Soprano voice, the piece requests nearly two octaves (to a G sharp), accompanied by two (unspecified) instrumental parts, probably violas in an original contrapuntal texture, and continuo. The only indication in the partition is an indication for a tremolo in the accompaniment. The dedication is "To his late father [Johann Buxtehude]".
