The song was recorded on January 3th, 1992. All the rights go out to Barrett Jones and Dave Grohl. SESSION INFORMATION: Details of this session are quite sparse. Three tracks were recorded during the day with Grohl on all instruments. The first track was an early version of 'Alone + Easy Target' with a similar structure to later versions but alternative lyrics. Grohl has previously stated that Nirvana would jam on this song in soundchecks of shows in late 1991 so it's possible this was not the first demoed version of the song. The second track recorded was an early version of the track 'Floaty'. This version of the song is structurally very similar to the later 1995 version but on this recording harmonic vocals are present on the chorus, suggesting the song wasn't completely finished at this session. Dave hadn't figured out the chorus yet. The final track recorded was titled 'Empty Handed', a short, fast punky track that Grohl described as "an experiment in singing, guitar playing and recording." Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2015 Grohl said that many of the songs recording during this era were "an experiment for fun" and as evidenced by the listening session seen during Sonic Highways, he had forgotten about many of them. The box containing the master reel for the session can be seen on the artwork for the release 'Songs From The Laundry Room' and notes are written on the box that appear to show what is on each of the 8 tracks on the reel. Track 1 is noted as 'B', denoting bass guitar. Tracks 2 and 3 are drums whilst tracks 4 and 5 are noted 'G', guitar tracks. The 6th track is empty, and whilst tracks 7 + 8 are not visible, this suggests vocals were not originally recorded at this session, since it would be logical to add them to the next free track. It's likely therefore that they were added at a later date as was common for Grohl to do during these recording sessions with Barrett. TRACKS RECORDED: 1. Rent (Jerky Boys) 2. Floaty 3.
