Damien Rice a commencé sa carrière de musicien en tant que chanteur du groupe rock Juniper, qui a sorti deux singles. Alors que le groupe est sur le point d'enregistrer un album, Damien décide de le quitter (les autres membres ont formé le groupe Bell X1) et part sillonner l'Europe. Lorsqu'il rentre en Irlande, il se lance dans sa première maquette solo. En 2004 la chanson "The Blower's Daughter" de son premier album O est choisie pour la BO du film Closer, entre adultes consentants. Une autre chanson de l'album est utilisée brièvement dans ce film, ce sont les premières notes de "Cold Water". On peut entendre ce même morceau dans le générique de fin du film Stay du suisse Marc Forster. La chanson "Delicate" est jouée dans un épisode de la saison 1 de la série Lost, les disparus. Ce premier album s'est classé seconde meilleur vente de tous les temps en Irlande derrière U2. Fin 2006, il sort son second album intitulé 9 et interprète "9 crimes" dans un épisode de la troisième saison de Grey's Anatomy. En mars 2007 il se lance dans une tournée dans quelques villes françaises : Lille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Paris, et il sera les 4 et 5 Juillet à l'Olympia. Après plusieurs années de concerts et d'enregistrements où la chanteuse Lisa Hannigan était omniprésente (secondes voix sur certaines chansons, couplets entiers sur d'autres, voire chansons complètes), Lisa disparait brutalement. Le 25 mars 2007, après plusieurs concerts réalisés sans elle , le site officiel annonce son départ officiel. Les deux musiciens mettent un terme à leur relation professionnelle sans espoir, a priori, de retravailler ensemble un jour. La déception est grande chez les fans. En Juin 2007, son titre "9 crimes" est présent dans le film Shrek le troisième....
