Description of the artist Craig David
Craig David, né le 5 mai 1981 à Southampton (Hampshire, Angleterre), est un musicien britannique. Son enfance, plutôt sans histoire, il la partage entre l'univers du hip hop et la nouvelle culture garage britannique. Passionné par la musique, il se met à composer ses premières chansons sur son bloc-notes et son dictaphone. Dès 14 ans, il entre comme MC dans une radio pirate locale où se mêlent rythmes R'n'B, ragga et sons garage. Tour à tour MC et DJ, le jeune prodige se produit dans les clubs de sa ville natale et rencontre le DJ Mark Hill des Artful Dodger, les pères spirituels du 2-step. Le courant passe rapidement. Ils se font tout d'abord remarquer par une reprise en version garage du tube Human de Human League, avant d'enregistrer un morceau intitulé Rewind, mélange de R'n'B et garage. Rewind recueille un vif succès dans les discothèques et le mouvement underground d'outre-Manche. Résultat : Craig décroche un contrat auprès du label Wildstar. Fill Me In Influencé notamment par Stevie Wonder, Usher et Faith Evans, le jeune métis s'attaque alors à son premier single en solo : Fill Me In. Le disque fait un tabac et grimpe immédiatement à la première place des hit-parades. Une performance remarquable pour un artiste de 18 ans à peine. S'ensuit en août 2000 son premier album Born To Do It qui le fait connaître dans l'Europe entière. À la croisée des genres pop et R'n'B, cet opus nous révèle la voix chaude et sensuelle de Craig enrobée de mélodies originales et bien travaillées. Un disque qui, apparemment, ne laisse pas indifférent : il s'en écoule plus de 70 000 exemplaires dès le jour de sa sortie.
