Christina Maria Aguilera de son vrai nom est née d'un père, Fausto Wagner Xavier Aguilera, équatorien officier de l'U.S. Army, et d'une mère, Shelly Loraine Fidler, une enseignante d'origine albanaise/ italienne pianiste et violoniste le 18 décembre 1980 à New York, Etats-Unis) Elle était passionnée par toute la culture espagnole, elle fut d'ailleurs un temps traductrice. Christina a toujours voulu être chanteuse et c'est à l'âge de huit ans qu'elle débute dans le monde de la musique en chantant à l'émission de télévision Star Search. Entre temps, elle multiplie les apparitions dans les spectacles scolaires et communautaires. À l'âge de dix ans, elle chante l'hymne national pour les Steelers et les Penguins de Pittsburgh et à l'âge de douze ans, elle fait son entrée dans le All New Mickey Mouse Club avec plusieurs autres vedettes telles que Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, J.C. Chasez et Keri Russell. Sa mère s'est remariée avec Jim Kearns que Christina considère comme son père, puisqu'il l'a quasiment élevée. Shelly, et Jim ont eu un enfant ensemble : Mickey (né 1996). La soeur biologique de Christina est Rachel (1986) et les deux enfants de Jim sont Casey et Stefanie. Après deux ans avec le groupe, elle voyage outre-mer pour enrichir son talent de chanteuse. Elle part en direction du Japon et y enregistre un duo avec le populaire chanteur Keizo Nakanishi : All I Wanna Do. De retour aux États-Unis, elle participe à une audition pour devenir la chanteuse de la chanson thème du film d'animation Mulan (Disney).
