Description of the artist Bill Evans
Bill Evans est né le 16 août 1929 à Plainfield (New-Jersey). Son père, d'origine galloise, et sa mère, d'origine russe, sont mélomanes. Ils lui font étudier le piano et en « second instrument » le violon (qu'il abandonnera au bout de deux ans) puis la flûte. Adolescent, il commence à s'intéresser au jazz, et en particulier à Bud Powell, Nat King Cole, George Shearing et Lennie Tristano ; il joue dans des orchestres amateurs locaux. Il poursuit ses études musicales au Southern Louisiana College dont il sort primé en 1950. Après un bref passage dans l'orchestre du clarinettiste Herbie Field, il passe trois ans dans l'armée, comme flûtiste, en garnison à Fort Sheridan. Il gardera toujours de ces années un souvenir amer. C'est en trio piano - contrebasse - batterie, formule qu'il disait préférer à toute autre, que le pianiste Bill Evans (1929 - 1980) aura enregistré la majeure partie de ses nombreux disques (une centaine) à partir de 1960. Néanmoins, idée de producteur, il sacrifiera au don d'ubiquité grâce à la technique du re-recording (ré-enregistrement), à deux ou trois " voix " superposées, piano acoustique et électrique, les fameuses Conversations with Myself. Bien qu'il soit visiblement peu à l'aise, seul, dans un studio d'enregistrement, il grava trois albums en " solo absolu ", les Solo Sessions en Janvier 1963, Alone au Webster Hall de New York City à l'automne 1968 et Alone (again) en Décembre 1975. Alors qu'il ne répétait pratiquement jamais en trio, il confiait combien le solo était pour lui une sorte d'épreuve (préparation, concentration), on alla jusqu'à évoquer un certain malaise devant ce face-à-face avec lui même qu'il semblait redouter dans cette solitude totale.
