Here we have one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs ever written. The music was written by Hoagy Carmichael, while he based the lyrics on a poem written by Jane Brown Thompson. The song is made even more poignant by the fact that Jane passed away a night before the song was introduced on radio. She had given Hoagy the poem while she was a student at Indiana University. He didn't know her name and it took much searching before she was identified. There are quite a few other versions of this song, but for me, this one, by Bea, is the best. The biggest hit versions in 1939 were by Red Norvo and His Orchestra (reaching #3) and Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra (#9). A later version by Karen Chandler charted at #19 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in 1967.
