New Zealand police say they will not investigate the case of a mother who left her baby alone in a car while she went shopping, as no one has yet come forward to lodge a formal complaint. The mother visited a local supermarket in Porirua, north of Wellington, at around 9 a.m. on Saturday morning with her infant child strapped into a child's seat on the car's passenger side. She left the sleeping child alone in the car with her phone number on a handwritten note to other shoppers on the baby's blanket, in the event of an emergency. A couple passing by saw the unattended baby and became concerned. They were soon joined by another couple that called the mother using the phone number written on the note. Leaving a child under 14 years of age unattended is an offence punishable with a fine of up to $2,000. However, Senior Sergeant Justin Rakena of Porirua police said even if a complaint is lodged, it's unlikely to result in prosecution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health.
