Here we have another great "jazz standard" played by Andre Kostelanetz and His Orchestra. "Deep purple" was written in 1934 by pianist/composer Peter De Rose but at first the song went by rather unnoticed. It wasn't until 1939, when Mitchell Parish added the lyrics that the song began its 'career'. Famous orchestras like Artie Shaw, Larry Clinton and many others started to put the piece on their repertoire. Vocalists were Helen Forest and Bea Wain respectively. Later popular versions were brought by Babe Ruth, (40s) Earl Bostic (50's) and Donny and Mary Osmond (70's). Here, Carroll Huxley presented a beautiful arrangement to Mr Kostelanetz and hence the song was included on Kosty's fantastic 1964 album "I Wish You Love". And, just "pour la petite histoire" : is there a connection between this jazz tune and the pop group 'Deep Purple' ? The answer is .... yes there is ! The British rock band got their name from Pete De Rose's hit after guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother repeatedly asked if they would be performing the song, her personal favourite. (Not sure if they ever played it for her ;-) From the 1964 album "I Wish You Love" here are Andre "Kosty" Kostelanetz and His Orchestra with the majestic "Deep Purple". Enjoy !
