Randy Giumarra, Vice President of Sales, Giumarra Vineyards, joins AndNowUKnow on this episode of Behind the Greens to discuss the future of grapes. Mr. Giumarra joins us from one of the company's ranches in the southern region of the San Joaquin Valley in a location called Wheeler Ridge, California. The area is arguably the most fertile and best grape growing region in the world, according to Mr. Giumarra. The Giumarra family has been working on a crossbreeding program for over fifteen years and the company is finally begun to see the results of the program in the past few years and are starting to put some of those varieties into commercial production. One of those varieties is the Arra 15. A number of the varieties are going to be planted in the San Joaquin Valley by the Giumarra family and some of the varieties will be taken to other parts of the world to be planted. Randy Giumarra reflects on the grape industry with us. He notes that what the industry may see in the future is the whole complexion of the table grape industry transitioning. The new varieties are changing everything in the business, he reflects. The company has been really excited about these new varieties that will allow Giumarra to change over its trellis system and make it an easier working experience for the employees as well as allow the company to offer a more premium product for the customers at the other end. The younger generation at Giumarra feels very blessed, Mr. Giumarra states, because they have generations of older Giumarras that they have learned so much from.
