Fille d’un chauffeur de taxi et d’une mère pharmacienne, la jeune Amy-Jade Winehouse grandit dans l’univers du jazz par le biais de sa famille, installée à Londres : sa grand-mère qui a fréquenté le saxophoniste Ronnie Scott et des oncles musiciens l’ont initiée à l’écoute des grandes voix, de Dinah Washington à Frank Sinatra. Adolescente, elle s’intéresse au rap des TLC et Salt-N-Pepa et abandonne ses études quand son ami, le chanteur de R&B Tyler James présente une cassette d’Amy à son directeur artistique. Un contrat vite décroché à vingt ans, elle enregistre Frank (2003) avec le producteur hip hop Salaam Remi. Avec son étonnant mélange de soul et de rap, l’album est cité comme l’une des plus belles réussites de l’année et la chanson « Stonger Than Me » remporte un Ivor Novello Award. Le caractère bougon de la demoiselle rétive à toute promotion commence alors à défrayer la chronique des tabloïds anglais qui commentent sans relâche ses frasques, sa douzaine de tatouages et ses problèmes d’alcool et de drogues. En octobre 2006, le hit-single « Rehab » sonne comme une réponse à la presse et à sa maison de disques, et entraîne le remarquable album Back To Black en tête des classements, faisant d’Amy Winehouse la révélation de l’année et une nouvelle icône soul. Son producteur, le prodige Mark Ronson, l’invite sur le titre « Valerie » de son propre album Version (2007). Le 18 mai 2007, Amy Winehouse épouse son mentor Blake Fielder-Civil dans le plus grand secret à Miami et se produit aux Eurockéennes de Belfort le 29 juin.
