A Tribe Called Quest est un groupe formé à New York (Queens) en 1988, constitué de 4 membres : Q-Tip (Johnathan Davis), Phife Dawg (Malik Taylor), Ali Shaheed Muhammad et Jarobi White. Jarobi quitta le groupe après la sortie de leur premier album, en 1990. Le groupe faisait partie du collectif des Natives Tongues, avec notamment les De La Soul, Black Sheep, ou encore les Jungle Brothers (qui donnèrent au groupe le nom « A Tribe Called Quest »). Les trois premiers albums connurent un grand succès, et firent du groupe un des piliers du rap alternatif. Ils étaient un des rares groupes de l’époque qui critiquait la tournure que prenait le rap (le gangsta rap principalement) et traitaient dans leurs textes des problèmes de la société (notamment l’utilisation du mot « Nigger », le viol ou encore l’industrialisation du rap). Le groupe était aussi un des pionniers du Jazz-Rap (avec De La Soul et Gangstarr), privilégiant l’utilisation de samples Jazz au lieu de samples funk. Leur premier album, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (1990) a connu un bon succès critique, notamment grâce au single « Can I Kick It? ». Mais c’est avec leur second album, The Low End Theory, sorti en 1991, que le groupe connu un véritable succès. The Low End Theory est souvent considéré comme un des meilleurs albums de rap de tout les temps ; on retrouve dans cet album des thèmes tels que le problème du viol (The Infamous Date Rape) ou les défauts de la société de consommation (Show Business, Rap Promoter), et des participations de Sadat X, Lord Jamar, Diamond D, et du groupe Leaders Of The New School (groupe dont faisait parti Busta Rhymes).
