Check out the latest GCN Show to enter now. This week in the world of cycling, we learned that it doesn’t matter if you come last, as long as you can pull good wheelies. This is Sam Bennett cruising up the fearsome Monte Zoncolan. It helps having already won two stages I’d guess, but I wouldn’t know. We also learned that pro rider Pawel Bernas was lucky to escape without injury after this brutal crash. Haha, the CCC rider got well and truly busted by the helicopter shots there. Now, why did he do it you may be asking? Well there’s a rule that states By crashing inside the last 3km of the stage he would get given the same time as the peloton. In this case, without any effort or risk. He might have been busted, but he’s definitely not alone in doing this. Except that to do a proper job He really needed to pull a short leg up and get some chain oil on his leg. Anyway, it got us thinking, getting caught in a crash is a great excuse for a cyclist, it’s cast iron, indisputable... or it was… True, but what other excuses does every cyclist need in their back pocket? For when you haven’t got the legs? Or when you can’t really be bothered? Or when you haven’t trained? Or when you’re late for the group ride, again! Well, I could probably get us started with Something that worked for me. I can’t remember ever having admitted this before, so here goes… In my last season as a pro mountain biker, things were unravelling faster than Chris Froome at the Giro. during a pretty major race, I was creeping and going backwards but i didn’t want to be seen to pull out, again. So... I found a quiet part of the course just past one of the pits, pulled over to one side, and let my front tyre down. I then gave my spare tube and gas canister to a young spectator and walked back to the start line.
